The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Animal Agriculture Agent Training Conference is quickly approaching. The Training Conference will be held August 6-8. The entire schedule can be found below. 

Remember Monday, August 6 is in Schaub Hall, Tuesday, August 7 is at the Graham Building at the NC State Fairgrounds, and Wednesday, Aug 8 is at the Beef Educational Unit!

Monday, August 6, Schaub Hall (NC State Campus)

10:00 – 10:30 New agents (5 or fewer years of CES service) and specialists arrive and enjoy snacks and coffee.

10:30 – 11:00 a.m. Welcome and introductions of new agents and all specialists attending.

11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Needs of new agents. New agents will discuss their needs and challenges.

12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Pizza and salad lunch, everyone is welcome!

1:00 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. Introductions and welcome. Todd See, Tom Melton, Matt Poore

1:15 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Dealing with controversial issues. How do you help concerned citizens when even the experts don’t want to talk about it? Farm Bureau technical specialists present brief background on current issues, and a panel of agents discuss how to approach citizen calls. Chester Lowder, Keith Larrick, Eve Honeycutt, Liz Lahti, and Beth Burchell.

2:30 – 2:45       Break.

2:45 – 3:45       Making an effective farm visit.

8:00 a.m. – 8:15 a.m. Networking over coffee/drinks/doughnuts/snacks.

8:15 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. New Faculty Introduction, Jon Holt.

8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Integrated Pasture Weed Control Programs. Fred Yelverton, Miguel Castillo, Ramon Leon. This session will feature a team of specialists from the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences who will discuss how to use a variety of management practices including fertilization, grazing management and strategic use of herbicides to make the most productive pastures possible. Will be approved for 1.5 hrs pesticide license credit.

10:00 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. Break.

10:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. Important laws regulating animal agriculture, Andrew Brannon.

11:15 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. Helping producers with state and federal cost-share programs, Lee Holcomb.

11:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Lunch.

12:30 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. Do we need extension veterinarians?, Tom Melton and Paula Cray.

12:45 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. Economic Outlook for Animal Agriculture, Kelly Zering (Swine and Poultry), Brittany Whitmire (Dairy) and Chris Prevatte (Beef).

1:45 p.m. -– 2:15 p.m. Making Common Sense Fertilizer Recommendations, Brandon Poole.

2:15 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Working with beginning farmers, Gary Bullen, Johnny Rogers and Sarah Blacklin.

3:15 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Applied forage economics. The economic realities of annual vs perennial forages, legumes, and harvested vs grazed forages. Chris Prevatte.

Wednesday, August 8, Lake Wheeler Road Field Lab Beef Educational Unit (BEU)

8:00 a.m. – 8:15 a.m. Coffee/Doughnuts/Snacks.

8:15 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Managing internal and external pests in cattle and other pasture-based livestock species, Wes Watson and Mark Alley.

This session will cover the latest on controlling flies, lice, worms, and coccidia, including basic education on these important pest species and how to develop an effective control program. Will be approved for 1.5 hours of pesticide training credit (pending).

10:00 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. Break.

10:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Elective Sessions.

The Jim Graham Building is near the east Entrance to the State Fairgrounds off Blueridge Road.

Lake Wheeler Road Beef Unit for the Wednesday activities 4505 Mid Pines Road Raleigh, NC 27603

The Beef Educational Unit is located 2 miles south of Interstate 40.

  • Exit I-40 onto Lake Wheeler Road and drive
  • Cross over Tryon, then go approximately one more mile and turn right (west) onto Mid Pines
  • Take the first right (dirt road) and you will see the Beef Educational Unit (which has a bright red roof)
